Aja Ekadashi

Aja Ekadashi Vrata is observed during the waning phase (Krishna Paksha) of the moon in August/September. Ekadashi fasting is observed on the 11th day of a lunar fortnight in the traditional Hindu calendar. The significance of this Ekadashi was explained to Yudhisthira by Lord Krishna. Observing this vrat destroys sins. The importance of Aja Ekadashi is explained in the Brahma Vaivartha Purana.

Yudhisthira Maharaja said, “O Janardana, protector of all living beings, please tell me the name of the Ekadashi that occurs during the dark fortnight of the month of Shravan.”

Lord Krishna replied, “O King, hear attentively. The name of this sin-destroying holy Ekadashi is Aja. Anyone who fasts completely on this day and worships Sri Narayan becomes free from all reactions to sinful activities. Even one who merely hears about this Ekadashi becomes purified.”

Krishna continued, “There once lived a noble king named Harishchandra. Known for his truthfulness, he was tested by fate and lost his kingdom, wealth, wife, and son. Forced into hardship, he still upheld truth and righteousness.”

One day, sage Gautama encountered Harishchandra and compassionately instructed him to observe the sacred Aja Ekadashi fast. He assured the king that fasting on this day would destroy all sins accumulated over many lifetimes.

Following the sage’s guidance, Harishchandra observed Aja Ekadashi with full devotion. Instantly, all his sins were destroyed. His dead wife and son were restored to life. Celestial beings rejoiced, showering flowers from the heavens. The king regained his kingdom and lived happily.

When Harishchandra left this mortal world, his entire family ascended with him to the spiritual realm due to the power of Aja Ekadashi.

Lord Krishna concluded, “O Pandava, one who faithfully observes Aja Ekadashi certainly becomes free from sins and attains the spiritual world. Listening to the glories of Aja Ekadashi awards the merit of performing an Ashvamedha Yagna.”
